Non-Hermitian robust edge states in one-dimension: Anomalous localization and eigenspace condensation at exceptional points

Capital to topological insulators, the bulk-boundary correspondence ties a topological invariant computed from the bulk (extended) states with those at the boundary, which are hence robust to disorder. Here we put forward an ordering unique to non-Hermitian lattices, whereby a pristine system becomes devoid of extended states, a property which turns out to be robust to disorder. This is enabled by a peculiar type of non-Hermitian degeneracy where a macroscopic fraction of the states coalesce at a single point with geometrical multiplicity of $1$, that we call a phenomenal point.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

How EFL teachers teach vocabulary : do the beliefs and the actions match?

The vocabulary teaching practices of EFL teachers are guided by their beliefs and assumptions about what constitutes sound teaching and learning, and by their knowledge of lexical learning and teaching. This paper deals with teachers? choices regarding their vocabulary teaching practices, focusing on the lexical content and the techniques used in class. Contribución al estudio litológico de los materiales empleados en monumentos de Córdoba de distintas épocas

En este trabajo se estudian los diferentes tipos de materiales de construcción en monumentos de Córdoba durante distintas épocas y culturas. Se han utilizado las técnicas habituales para la determinación mineralógica, química , petroestructural, etc. Los materiales más empleados son las biocalcarenitas del Mioceno. También se han empleado calizas cámbricas, calizas del Titónico, mármoles, granitos, esquistos, ladrillos, tierra prensada, etc. Se citan algunos monumentos realizados en las épocas: romana, árabe, s. XIII al XIX y s. XX.This work studies the different types of construction materials in monuments in Cordova during different eras and cultures. Usual techniques have been used to determine mineralogical, chemical and petrostructural elements, etc. The most used materials are biocalcarenites from the Miocene period. Other materials include Cambrian limestone, Tithonian limestone, marble, granite, slate, bricks, pressed earth, etc. Monuments are cited from Roman and Arabic eras, and from the 8th to the 19th and 20th century

The transition to irreversibility in sheared suspensions: An analysis based on a mesoscopic entropy production

We study the shear-induced diffusion effect and the transition to irreversibility in suspensions under oscillatory shear flow by performing an analysis of the entropy production associated to the motion of the particles. We show that the Onsager coupling between different contributions to the entropy production is responsible for the scaling of the mean square displacement on particle diameter and applied strain. We also show that the shear-induced effective diffusion coefficient depends on the volume fraction and use Lattice-Boltzmann simulations to characterize the effect through the power spectrum of particle positions for different Reynolds numbers and volume fractions. Our study gives a thermodynamic explanation of the the transition to irreversibility through a pertinent analysis of the second law of thermodynamics.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, paper submitted tp phys rev

Molecular prototypes for spin-based CNOT quantum gates

We show that a chemically engineered structural asymmetry in [Tb2] molecular clusters renders the two weakly coupled Tb3+ spin qubits magnetically inequivalent. The magnetic energy level spectrum of these molecules meets then all conditions needed to realize a universal CNOT quantum gate.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Problemas Actuales de Política Educacional en Chile, indagando en tiempo. Investigación Documental. ¿ Qué refleja el actual sistema de evalucación docente, como politica educativa, de la democracia chilena?

Trabajo presentado en la cátedra Política y Gestión Educacional en Chile, Magíster en política y gestión Educacional.Vivimos en una sociedad que ve a las formas evaluativas como parte de la realidad diaria. Dentro de este ámbito, la Evaluación Docente debería ser una más entre tantas, por lo que no tendría que llamar la atención más de lo que es en sí misma; sin embargo esto no sucede, puesto que no ha quedado lo suficientemente claro el tipo de evaluación que es, su finalidad como fortalecimiento, por una parte, de la profesión docente y por otra, su influencia directa, pero no exclusiva, en la calidad de la educación. No se debe dejar de lado su origen, el cual se gesta en un modelo de Democracia tan singular como lo es el modelo neoliberal de nuestra democracia, que pareciera tener más ribetes de una democracia más bien técnica, que una de carácter participativo. Bajo esta mirada, la Política de la Evaluación Docente se puede definir bajo dos ámbitos evaluativos: el democrático versus el tecno-evaluativo

Caracterización de materiales antiguos de construcción (tapial y adobe) en las iglesias de Cisneros, Villada y Boada de Campos (Palencia)

The aim of this work is to characterize the ancient building materials (mud wall and adobe) of three churches in the province of Palencia. This is the first part of a study which seeks to evaluate how the mud walls of the tower of the church of Cisneros reacted to restoration treatment which consisted of a structural reinforcement made by injecting a highly fluid grout of cement/lime/sand mortar. This treatment implies the introduction of large quantities of water into the fabric. The mud walls of the tower of Cisneros are compositionally and texturally very similar to each other, which indicates that despite their large dimensions, care was taken in the homogeneity of the materials. These mud walls are also very similar to those of the church of Villada. The original raw material is mud with some additives (rubble, ashes, bones, etc.) and some remains of lime used as a stabiliser. Although there is a very high proportion of clay, no effervescing clay has been detected. Hence it is deduced that once the mud wall was built, there were no important changes in volume due to variation in the humidity of the fabric. The characteristics of the adobe of the tower of Boada are logically different form those of the mud walls, being made of less sandy, more clayey mud with a high proportion of straw that the mud walls do not have, and without the addition of bricks, bones, etc.El objetivo de este trabajo es caracterizar los materiales antiguos de construcción (tapial y adobe) de tres iglesias en la provincia de Falencia. El trabajo es la primera parte de un estudio en el que se pretende evaluar el comportamiento de los tapiales de la torre de la iglesia de Cisneros frente al tratamiento de restauración, consistente en un cosido estructural mediante la realización de perforaciones en las que se introduce una barra de acero y donde, posteriormente, se inyecta una lechada muy fluidificada de mortero de cemento/cal/arena. Este tratamiento implica la introducción en las fábricas de grandes cantidades de agua. Los tapiales de la torre de Cisneros son, composicional y texturalmente, muy similares entre sí, lo que indica que, a pesar de sus grandes dimensiones, se cuidó la homogeneidad de los materiales. Estos tapiales guardan una notable similitud con los de la iglesia de Villada. La materia prima original es barro con algunos aditivos (escombro, cenizas, huesos, etc.) y algunos restos de cal empleada como estabilizante. Aunque la proporción de arcilla es muy elevada no se han detectado arcillas hinchables, de lo que se deduce que una vez construido el tapial no se habrían producido importantes cambios de volumen por variaciones de humedad de las fábricas. Las características del adobe de la torre de Boada son lógicamente diferentes de las de los tapiales estando constituido por un barro menos arenoso, más arcilloso, con una elevada proporción de paja que no tienen los tapiales y sin adiciones de ladrillos, huesos, etc

Quantum mechanical description of Stern-Gerlach experiments

The motion of neutral particles with magnetic moments in an inhomogeneous magnetic field is described in a quantum mechanical framework. The validity of the semi-classical approximations which are generally used to describe these phenomena is discussed. Approximate expressions for the evolution operator are derived and compared to the exact calculations. Focusing and spin-flip phenomena are predicted.
